Tour 1: Flores and Komodo

To make the most of your trip we recommend this 7-day tour starting from Labuan Bajo. We can host 9 clients per tour. This tour includes a trip to Komodo Island to see the famous Komodo dragons. Further down you find the detailed schedule for each day. We prepare snacks and drinks for a break between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner.

Please make sure to bring a raincoat, mosquito repellent and self care medicine.

Day 1

Rana Mese Lake

Pick up from Komodo airport in Labuan Bajo depending on guests’ flight schedule; we recommend a morning flight. After pick-up we drive to Ruteng, a small town and the capital of Manggarai district. On the way after about one hour drive we stop at Puarlolo for birding; the target is to spot Flores Monarch, Chestnut-capped Trush, Wallace’s Hanging Parrot, Red-cheeked Parrot, Crested Heleia, Thick-billed Heleia and Golden-rumped Flowerpecker and other species. We continue the drive to Ruteng, check-in our hotel and will spend the whole afternoon at Rana Mese Lake; The target at the lake is to spot Eye-browed Heleia, Flores Warbling Jungle Flycatcher, Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, Little Cuckoo Dove, Crested Heleia, Dark-back Imperial Pigeon and other species. We continue night birding from 6.30 pm until 8 pm for Flores Scops-Owl and Wallace’s Scops Owl and after that dinner is served in the hotel.

Day 2

Birding at Poco Ndeki Mount

At 5.00 am we drive to Kisol to Poco Ndeki Mount to look for Glittering Kingfisher, Flores Crow, Russet-capped Tesia, Flores Green Pigeon, Flores Hawk-eagle, Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, Elegant Pitta, Black-nape Fruit-dove and other species. After lunch in Borong we go afternoon birding in Kisol to cover the missing target and other targets like the Yellow-spectacled White-eye (Wallace’s Heleia), Rainbow Bee-eater, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Flame-breasted Sunbird, Golden-rumped Flowerpecker, Ornate Sunbird, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Short-toed Snake-Eagle, Brown-throated Sunbird and other species. We go night birding to look for Moluccan Scops-Owl and Mees’s Nightjar. We spend the night in Borong.

Day 3

Early at 5.00 am we start our one hour drive for morning birding in Rana Mese Lake for the missing target and some other target like the Pacific Black Duck and other species and then continue to Ruteng for lunch. Afternoon birding will be in Pagal, target Bonelis Eagle, Crested Heleia, Chestnut-backed Trush, Dark-backed Imperial-Pigeon, Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, Sunda Cuckoo, Elegant Pitta, Flores Green Pigeon, Tenggara Whistler, Wallace’s Hanging-parrot and other species. For night birding we stay near Ruteng to look for Wallace’s Scops-Owl, followed by dinner and over-night in our hotel in Ruteng.

Day 4

Mount Golo Lusang

Starting at 5.30 am we drive 20 minutes to Mount Golo Lusang, target , Bare-throated Whistler, Flores Leaf-Wabler, Flores Shortwing, Flores Flowerpecker, Mountain Tailorbird, Pygmy Cupwing, Metalic Pigeon, Rufous-chested Flycatcher, Chestnut-backed Trush, Black-backed Fruit-Dove, Barred Cuckoo-Dove and Flores Minivet and other species. For afternoon birding after lunch we will go to either a little forest close to Rana Mese lake or Pagal. The targets this afternoon depend on which target we missed in the morning. We will continued with night birding, to cover three species of owls and after that dinner will be served in the hotel

Day 5

Lingko, spiderweb rice fields

Early at 6.00 am we leave for Cancar to the Lingko, the famous spiderweb rice fields. We look for Spotted Kestrel, Five-colored Munia, Black-faced Munia, Scaly-breasted Munia, Sunda Zebra Finch, Ashy-bellied White-eye, Sunda White-eye, Mountain White-eye, Wallace’s Heleia and other species. We continue to drive to Labuan Bajo. Along the way we stop at ENte’er to look for Leaf Lorikeet. After lunch in Labuan Bajo we return to Puarlolo, depending on any missing target from the first day. If the target in Puarlolo was found, we will go birding in Pota Wangka to look for Wallace’s Hanging-Parrot, Great-billed Parrot and other missing target we looked for in Kisol. Possibly we continue with night birding to look for Mollucan Scops-Owl, Mees Nightjar and the Flores Scops- Owl. We have dinner and over-night in Labuan Bajo.

Day 6

Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis)

At 5.30 am we will board a speed boat and head for Komodo Island, targets Yellow-crested Cockatoo, Pied Imperial-Pigeon, Asian Coel, Orange-footed Scrubfowl, Green Junglefowl, Varied Goshawk, Brown Goshawk, Brahminy Kite, Lemon-bellied White-eye, Black-nape Monarch, Barred Dove, Sunda Collared-Dove, Flores Spangled Drongo, Black-naped Oriole, Large-billed Crow and many other common birds. And of course the giant lizard Komodo Dragon. You possibly can also spot Timor Deer and Wild Bore, both prey of the Komodo. After returning from Komodo Island we have lunch in Labuan Bajo and in the afternoon we will go birding in Pota Wangka or near Mount Mbeliling to cover the missing targets.

Day 7

On this last day of the tour, before your check-in for your return flight from Komodo airport in Labuan Bajo, we go for morning birding . We look for the Small Blue or Cerulean Kingfisher, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Collared Kingfisher, Short-toed Eagle, Brahminy Kite, Ornate Sunbird, Lemon-bellied White-eye, Golden-bellied Gerygone, White-faced Heron, Purple Heron, Intermediate Egret, Javan Pond Heron, Little Egret, Cattle Egret and other species and then we will drop you off at the airport.

We are flexible. In case you have other travels plans on Flores, we can adapt the starting and end point of this tour. We can start from Ruteng or Bajawa as well. The birding sites and the bird target remains the same.
